Apple released the iPhone 2.1 software on Tuesday, September 9th, just three weeks after iPhone 2.0.2 was released.

There are quite a few stories in the news about problems with v2.0.2. Dropped calls, 3G signal strength incorrect, short battery life, slow backup times and apps crashing the phone. Three weeks seems like an unusually short time between releasing updates. I suspect the problems with 2.0.x moved up the release of 2.1

According to an e-mail from Apple received today, this release consists of “many bug fixes and improvements”. Here is Apple’s list of improvements:

- Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
- Significantly better battery life for most users
- Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
- Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
- Faster installation of 3rd party applications
- Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
- Improved performance in text messaging
- Faster loading and searching of contacts
- Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
- Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
- Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
- Genius playlist creation

(thanks Apple for sending the list out!)
